Winter's Coming: Use This Nice Week to Wrap Up Your Roof and Gutter Projects

By Cedar Rapids Roofing · October 18, 2026

A two-story house with a shingled roof, autumn trees and fallen leaves on the lawn

Winter is on its way to Cedar Rapids, and a stretch of mild, dry fall days is the best gift a homeowner can get right now. It is the last easy window to get up on a ladder, finish the small roof jobs you put off all summer, and get your gutters ready to carry water instead of ice. Once the first real cold snap and snow arrive, every one of these jobs gets harder, slower and more dangerous.

Here is what to wrap up while the weather is nice, what you can safely do yourself, and when it makes sense to hand it to a local roofing pro.

Why the nice days matter for your roof

Asphalt shingles have adhesive strips that need the sun's warmth to bond. Shingles put on in warm weather seal down within days or weeks. Shingles put on in the cold may not seal until spring, which leaves them open to wind lifting them all winter. As we explained in our post on the best time to replace a roof in Cedar Rapids, that is why fall is prime roofing season here and why crews try to finish before late November.

The same goes for small fixes. Roofing sealants and caulks list a minimum application temperature on the label, and most need a dry surface. A few mild, sunny days in a row give a repair time to cure before the weather turns.

Where the leaves and sticks go in Cedar Rapids

If you are cleaning gutters and raking at the same time, the City of Cedar Rapids makes it easy. The city's fall leaf vacuum collection runs October 26 through December 3, 2026. Rake leaves to the parking area or grass next to the street (not into the street) by 7 a.m. on your quadrant's day. The city asks you to keep twigs and sticks out of leaf piles, because sticks clog the vacuum trucks. Gutter gunk with sticks in it belongs in your YARDY cart, which the city says is collected on your normal garbage day from early March to mid-December. See the city's yard waste page for the details.

Ice dams: the winter problem you can prevent in the fall

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of the roof. Heat from the house warms the upper roof, snow melts, and the water runs down to the colder eaves, where it refreezes. Over time, the ice builds up and the melting snow behind it has nowhere to go, so it can back up under the shingles and leak into ceilings and walls.

Clogged gutters do not cause ice dams by themselves, but they make the edge of the roof a great place for ice to build. The real fixes are better attic insulation, air sealing and ventilation, so the roof stays cold. Fall, while it is still comfortable to work in the attic, is the time to have that looked at. In winter, raking the bottom few feet of snow off the roof after a big storm also helps.
